Pink Zone Funds Mount Nittany Medical Center

Pink Zone funds Mount Nittany Medical Center breast health navigator to support people affected by breast cancer in our community

The Pennsylvania Pink Zone recently presented a check for $87,500 to the Mount Nittany Health Foundation for their successful fundraising year. Although the Pink Zone raises funds all year round, the Penn State Lady Lion’s annual Pink Zone Basketball Game is likely the most well-known event. This past year, the women took on Michigan in January at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Monies from Pink Zone are distributed to local organizations that provide breast cancer education, screening, treatment, and research. Mount Nittany Medical Center continues to be the lead beneficiary, with other recipients including Penn State Cancer Institute, PA Breast Cancer Coalition, Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital.

Last year’s funds continue to support the breast health navigator position at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Angelique Cygan, RN, has been in this role since January 2014, and is responsible for removing barriers to care, and ensuring timely access, treatment, and follow-up for patients dealing with breast cancer.

“When something is stopping a patient from getting the treatment/information they need, it is my job to find a way around that barrier,” says Cygan. “My role as a Navigator puts me in a rewarding position to collaborate with the medical team and the community as we connect patients with available resources. Navigation assures patients that we will clear a path to diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, they will not travel that path alone.”

Now in its eleventh year, the Pink Zone is planning many exciting events to continue the fundraising momentum and celebrate more than a decade of service to the community.
