UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – For the sixth-straight year, the Penn State women’s basketball program’s Play4Kay benefitting Pink Zone event will donate over $200,000 to the six beneficiaries that continue to champion the education about and research for finding a cure for breast cancer. The 2017 fundraising total reached $255,000, which marks the third highest total earned in the events 11-year history.

The funds raised at the 2017 Play4Kay benefitting Pink Zone game were presented to Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital, JC Blair Memorial Hospital, Kay Yow Cancer Fund, Mount Nittany Medical Center, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and Penn State Cancer Institute at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

A crowd of 8,213 welcomed 504 survivors that totaled 4,090 years of survivorship to the Bryce Jordan Center floor during the halftime celebration at the 2017 event, which saw Penn State topple No. 24/25 Michigan, 76-75.

In the event’s 11th year, the Lady Lions have donated more than $1.85 million to various local, regional and national breast cancer charities. The 2017 event total of $255,000 ranks No. 3 on the giving list, behind the record-setting 2014 event, which donated $310,000, and the 2013 event that totaled $260,000 of funds raised to fund breast cancer research. The 2013 and 2014 events were each recognized as the Play for Kay Initiative Division I winners.

“The continued growth and support that our community shows for our Play4Kay game benefitting Pink Zone event is outstanding,” said head coach Coquese Washington. “This event is incredibly meaningful to our entire program – players, coaches, staff and administrators – and brings national recognition to our campus for the efforts in the fight to cure breast cancer. Our most heartfelt thanks go out to all of the sponsors, fans and, of course, breast cancer survivors that make this event such a special part of our program each year.”
